Its funny, over the past several years I have attened numerous leadership conferances, classes, or seminars. All this to try and tell me how to lead, yet there are several books that whenever I read them I learn more about leadership then any conferance I have ever been to. These books are as follows:
Anything by Stephen E. Ambrose
-D-Day
-Band of Brothers
-Pegesus Bridge
-Citizen Soliders
-The Victors
Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
Blue Like Jazz by Dondald Miller
Searching for God Knows What by Donald Miller
Sex God by Rob Bell
The Bible
These books were not written as leadership helps, and I think thats what makes them so great. They simply show how people live, they relate life. I love that. If I were in charge of any form of leadership class I would have the group read Band of Brothers and The Bible. In my life those two books have the greatest effect on how I lead. This is because I want to see change in leadership I want to see people be servant leaders to learn that they do not lead for power, but they lead to make the life of those they lead better. Christ gave us the perfect example of how to lead. Why do we so often stray from that model? Its funny how selfishness works so hard agianst us. Outside of scriptures I think that leadership can be summed up in one quote from Band of Brothers:
Lt. Buck Compton is a new officer among the men of Easy Company (Band of Brothers) and while at the staging grounds for the Invasion of Normandy Lt. Richard Winters catches him gambling with the enlisted men. Winters begins to give Compton a speach and Compton asks if Winters is mad because the men like him, this is what follows:
'Buck' Compton: Are you ticked because they like me? Because I'm spending time to get to know my soldiers? I mean, c'mon, you've been with them for two years? I've been here for six days. Richard Winters: You were gambling, Buck.
'Buck' Compton: So what? Soldiers do that. I don't deserve a reprimand for it.
Richard Winters: What if you'd won?
'Buck' Compton: What?
Richard Winters: What if you'd won? Don't ever put yourself in the position where you can take from these men.

I think people follow you so willingly is because of your mindset like this. You take people seriously, and you empower them and keep them safe.
I love you!
